Pre-treatment of industrial wastewater: a major environmental and industrial challenge
Pre-treatment of industrial wastewater is a crucial step in the process of cleaning up industrial effluent. Beyond the regulatory aspect, which requires compliance with strict standards for industrial effluent discharge, this process offers numerous advantages for companies, both environmentally and economically.
Pre-treatment steps
Screening
The first phase of pre-treatment consists of removing coarse solids from wastewater, such as garbage or grease, during the screening stage. This action is essential to protect treatment plant equipment and prevent clogging of pipes. Recovered solids can be recycled as fuel for industry or as a supplement for biogas production, offering a relevant circular economy solution.
Screening
The second pre-treatment stage, sieving, takes the process of removing coarse matter and greasy effluent a step further. The sieve eliminates all coarse waste above the selected mesh size and separates some of the sand and grease present in the effluent.
Specific treatments
Depending on the characteristics of the effluent to be treated, more specific physico-chemical or filtration pretreatments can be implemented. Filtration and removal of effluent matter are required either as a single treatment if the problem is solids only, or as a pretreatment to prepare effluent for other processes.
Ovive Pretreatment Solutions
Ovive offers pre-treatment solutions that can be rapidly deployed thanks to an available pool of equipment. Ovive equipment prepares effluent for subsequent treatment, and is a compact, self-contained solution.
- Ovive curved grate: The grate, formed by welded bars, receives effluent projected under pressure by injection nozzles. The device is installed in a closed box fitted with inspection hatches.
- Ovive Rotary Screen – Internal feed : Effluent is fed into the inner part of the drum. The screened water passes through the orifices, is collected at the bottom of the drum and directed by gravity to the outlet pipe. Unfiltered particles are conveyed to the end of the drum, where they are collected in the outlet chute.
- Ovive Rotary Screen – External feed: All effluent arrives in the feed tank, rises to the top of the drum, keeping the waste on its periphery and sieving the liquid inwards. The waste is carried to the front of the screen, where it is lifted off the drum by an external scraper. The scraper is mounted on a spring assembly to ensure constant pressure on the drum. Washing ramps, fitted to our Ovive equipment, ensure constant flow rates.
Solutions Validation
Trials are possible with equipment rental to validate the best solution. The materials used in our equipment are adapted to different types of effluent (stainless steel, HDPE, etc.), and hot water washing is possible for grease removal.
Pre-treatment is a key stage in the durability of a treatment plant, ensuring its longevity and availability.
Industrial wastewater pretreatment and LWR: a long-term ally
Pre-treatment of industrial wastewater is an essential step in the sanitation process prior to the Reuse of Treated Wastewater (RWW). This process consists of a series of essentially physical and chemical procedures designed to eliminate, reduce or alter the pollutants present in the water, prior to its passage into more elaborate treatment systems. The main pre-treatment procedures include screening, coagulation, flocculation and filtration.
Pre-treatment steps
Screening and sieving
The first stages of pre-treatment, screening and sieving, are designed to eliminate raw waste, materials and substances that could interfere with subsequent treatment processes. These stages enable the treatment of particles ranging from fats and oils to suspended solids, organic substances and certain types of chemical toxins.
Filtration and removal of suspended solids
Filtration and removal of suspended solids are also essential steps, helping to protect advanced treatment systems from damage caused by untreated solid particles or aggressive chemicals. These processes increase the overall efficiency of the treatment system, delivering higher yields and longer system life.
Advantages of pre-treatment for LWR
Improving water quality
Industrial water pre-treatment significantly improves water quality for reuse, whether for industrial operations, agricultural irrigation or groundwater recharge. Advanced treatment processes benefit from increased protection, leading to optimum efficiency and extended system life.
Reducing health risks
Finally, pre-treatment plays a crucial role in reducing the health risks associated with wastewater reuse. By effectively eliminating harmful and potentially dangerous elements from the outset, it helps ensure safer, higher quality water for reuse.
Pre-treatment of industrial wastewater is a long-term ally, essential for optimizing subsequent treatment processes and guaranteeing the durability and efficiency of treated wastewater reuse systems. By improving water quality and reducing health risks, it represents a key step in the sustainable management of water resources.
