Industry is not only a water-hungry sector, but also a major producer of wastewater of various types: process water, cleaning water, technical water, and even domestic water from washrooms, restaurants and offices. Each of these categories is loaded with specific pollutants: organic matter, metals, suspended solids, various chemical products, etc. The Reuse of Treated Wastewater (REUT) consists in reusing this treated effluent for circular uses within the production site (washing, boiler, etc.) in order to reduce pollutant discharges into the natural environment and freshwater withdrawals.
Why REUT?
Climate change, with its increased droughts, and changes in our water consumption patterns, combined with population growth, are putting pressure on water resources and prompting us to rethink our water management models. The aim is to ensure sustainable, rational access to water for all. The reuse of treated wastewater reduces the need for freshwater abstraction. This solution can contribute to achieving water abstraction reduction targets (-10% of water abstracted by 2030, Plan Eau 2030 France). Water reuse systems enable production sites to become more resilient and self-sufficient in water, thus compensating for future periods of drought that could limit production.
Regulations are evolving to promote water reuse, while establishing a strict regulatory framework to protect the environment and public health.
